Club History

The Maribyrnong Park Tennis Club (MPTC) was first formed on October 11, 1964 as a co-operative and at the same time a constitution was formed. Meetings were held at the Angler’s Hall, Maribyrnong. The club had 90 members and funds of 330 pounds!!

Two years later MPTC was incorporated as a Community Advancement Society where its main aim was to construct 2 entoutcas courts at a cost of $3,000. More than thirty years later extra courts are still a priority! Social events at that time included an annual dinner dance, the screening of “Funny Girl” and progressive dinners.

Over time the original en tout case surfaces were replaced by mod grass. The lino in the clubhouse was replaced by carpet. As the years rolled by the club stopped hiring courts at night and voluntary tasks such as gardening, cleaning and general maintenance were done by paid contractors.

In 1995, Anthony Burke was appointed as club coach. The coaching program headed by Anthony Burke continues to thrive; operating six days a week with three assistants in hand.

In 2003, we had 465 members compared to 90 members back in 1965; We had 40 senior teams consisting of 20 night teams, 10 Midweek ladies and 10 Saturday pennant. To accommodate these teams the club hires two courts at East Keilor and four courts at Royal Park.

In 2019, we have approximately 300 members that service 21 Night Teams, 5 Mid-week Ladies teams, 14 junior teams including 4 combined teams, 2 with Riverside and one each with OLN and Gladstone Park, 5 NSTA (Saturday afternoon) sides and 1 pennant side.

Our junior membership continues to build and in 2019, we have approximately 100 juniors, and we are hiring courts at Tullamarine and Doutta Galla for Friday night competition.
